Hanukkah Marketplace

All money we receive for the goods goes directly to the indigenous women who made them in Chiapas, Mexico.

Now in its 21th year, the Oakwood School Chiapas Project communicates – through information, photographs, and personal experiences – an understanding of how indigenous (Mayan) people in Chiapas, Mexico have been developing autonomous communities – with their own system of government, medical care, education, media and so on.  We have continued to work with a federation of eight women’s cooperatives (the Women of Corn in Resistance) from different villages in the rainforest and moutains, displaying and receiving donations for their artisan work.  This year we have had many Chiapas House Parties in the homes of Oakwood families, and worked at a range of festivals and events around Los Angeles.  We raised almost $70,000 last year, bringing the total we have sent to Chiapas (where a good annual income is $3600) close to a million and a half dollars.  Each summer a delegation of about twenty Oakwood students spends ten days in Chiapas, getting to know the women (fairly intimately), and discussing issues and activities with indigenous organizations.
